WWII and Korean era M1 Garand rifles graced the 200 yard firing line on 1 May 2010 as the Association held
its first Civilian Marksmanship Program Garand Match in several years.
Eight shooters braved 14 mph winds and the threat of heavy rains to fire their first match of the season. This
was the first of two scheduled CMP Garand matches being held at the Association this year. Derek Stratelak
received his CMP master instructor certification this past January which allows him to act as Match Director for
these matches. "I really didnt expect a large crowd today because of other matches being held across the
state and then the weather but our July 3rd match has gotten a lot of interest so far. We could have upwards
of 80 shooters in July."
Derek Stratelak was the overall match winner with a score of 267-1 while David Flanagan placed second and
David Dell rounded out the top three with scores of 266-1 and 257-1 respectively..
"We had a couple of new shooters come out today and they said they had a great time even if the weather was
less than exceptional" David Dell said. "They plan on shooting the High Power League during the summer and
maybe participate in the full-distance Michigan Rifle Pistol Association matches as well, he added.
Shooters can use these matches as proof of competition for the purchase of rifles and ammunition from the
CMP. The CMP sells surplus M1 Garands, and appropriate ammunition and other shooting supplies.
